Renowned artist, Gina Judy will open her exhibit in the Studio Gallery at Artworks around townon Friday, August 2nd. The month long show will begin with a free reception from 5:30 – 8 p.m. and is open to the public. Judy is a Steubenville, Ohio native whose teaching career spanned thirty years and included all grade levels. Her students were repeatedly recognized at the regional and state levels. Judy was recognized as an Ohio Region East Outstanding Art Educator and named to the OAEA Circa-Society of Membership. She now teaches art workshops to other artists, the most recent being in Cambridge, Ohio for The Southeastern Ohio Watermedia Society (also serving as their Vice President).
While at Bethany College, she studied with the late Wes Wagner whose influence instilled in her a love of watercolor. She earned her BA there and went on to obtain her MA at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Her education continued by taking workshops with such notable artists as Frank Webb, Barry Jeter, Kathleen Zimbicki, Gerald Brommer and Pat Dews. Retiring five years ago, Judy has exhibited in 12 states and in 17 shows that have required a national / international screening, and has placed in one of them. Her other talents include being a freelance wedding photographer, a muralist as well as a college trained pianist.
Judy’s associations and awards are numerous and impressive. She is a new Signature member of the Alaska Watercolor Society and an associate member of a number of state societies, including OWS, where she has been accepted into this year’s show in Mansfield, Ohio, only one of nine to do so. Judy is also a member of a number of Pittsburgh art leagues, including three that require jurying for membership, Pittsburgh Society of Artists included. She is also Vice President of Jefferson county Retired Teachers and the Steubenville Art association. Highlights of 2019 include; receiving First Place in the “Waterworks” Pittsburgh Watercolor Society Member Show from Sarah Hall, Chief Curator at The Frick, Pittsburgh, being included in the Erie Art Museum Spring Show, The Hoyt Art Center Regional (New Castle, PA), Pikes Peak International Watercolor Show, Alaska Watercolor Society, West Virginia National Aqueous, two Webster-Arts National Shows (St. Louis, MO) and receiving first place awards in a number of local / regional shows in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Judy’s artist’s statement: “As a retired Ohio public school art educator of 30 years it only follows that I would feel that artists should be lifelong learners in their craft; do a lot of ‘looking’ and a lot of exploration into different techniques and media. An artist should continuously grow and evolve; once you think you’ve ‘arrived’, you’re actually done for.”
Wheeling’s Laughlin Chapel will display member’s work in the student gallery in the north end of Artworks during August. Artworks around townInc. is a nonprofit charitable and educational organization that operates a Gallery and Art Center for the benefit of the artists and general public of the region.
