OI Ceramics Takeover 2026
ARTWORKS around town is once again honored to be a part of Oglebay Institute’s Ceramics Takeover. Jerry Wagner will be the guest ceramicist in our Studio Gallery. The exhibit starts with an Opening Reception on Friday, February 27 at 5:00 p.m. The party is free and all are welcome.
The Ceramics Takeover is a Four Day Immersive Ceramics Focused Experience beginning on February 26th to March 1st. There will be parties, workshops and artist demonstrations taking place in several locations around the valley.
Jerry Wagner earned an MFA in Ceramic Art from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania after which he worked for the Campbell Pottery near Erie, Pa. While there he was responsible for the glazing and firing of more than100 pieces a day. He then spent a year teaching at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild. The next 37 years he served as the Ceramic Combustion Process Engineer for Swindell Dressler International Company in Pittsburgh. While there, he encountered ceramics on a grand scale with considerably different technologies than he had experienced before.
During his career he kept his own studio. His pieces have become more functional rather than decorative or abstract and glazes and finishes are very important in his final product. He states “All glazes are developed and tested by me and while it may take years for me to add a new glaze to my work, I do it with a lot of thought about how the glaze functions with the shape and intent of the completed work.”
The Student Gallery will exhibit the works of visitors to the Ohio Valley Sexual Assault Help Center (SAHC). We look forward to having them participate again this year. According to the website for the organization, SAHC “seeks to create pathways to healing…”. The process of making art is a special exercise in the journey to health.
ARTWORKS is a non-profit fine art gallery and educational organization dedicated to serving the community and is located in Wheeling’s Centre Market. Hours are 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.
